The North Face pulled this off with a special sonic and line-bonding technology (it's called Magic Seams) that takes the perforated and leaky old school sewn seams out of the construction process. Without thread holes, there's less of a chance that the waterproof and breathable HyVent DT fabric will ever seep and leak. Magic Seams also use a 10-mm. seam tap that can reduce a garment's weight by 10% to 20%--without compromising the durability. The DIAD also has mini pit-vents that give you cooling without the excess zipper weight. While most hikers, backpackers and climbers like some sort of sleeve venting, many find that the longer pit zips are either too long or tend to allow too much moisture into the jacket. The mini pit-vent design gives you cool comfort without the unwanted extra exposure. The North Face designed the DIAD jacket with a close performance fit that's excellent for high impact activities like climbing and fast-packing. This jacket is also compressible enough to fit in a small corner of a pack or dry bag for easy portability on sunny days.
