Sky Walk, Suspension Bridge, Stairway to Nothingness - Dachstein - video
The Dachstein cable car took me up to a height of 2700 meters, to the highest mountain in Styria, the Dachstein. A fabulous natural environment unfolded before me, with panoramic views of the Austrian peaks. It is said that Slovenia and the Czech Republic can also be seen from here.
Next to the upper station of the cable car there are several tourist attractions. The Skywalk lookout, the Dachstein Suspension Bridge, the Stairway to Nothingness, and the Ice Palace. The latter three attractions require payment.
The Ice Palace is located under a huge tent, but I skipped it due to the entrance fee. I believe that the Ice Hotel near Lake Balea, in the Fogarasi Mountains - Romania, is more spectacular.
The Sky Walk lookout is situated 250 meters above the vertical rock face of Hunerkogel, and it is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Alps. The Dachstein Suspension Bridge is the highest suspended bridge in Austria, offering a view of the rocky southern side of the Dachstein, up to a depth of 400 meters.
The Stairway to Nothingness is perhaps the most interesting attraction. It consists of 14 narrow steps that lead to nowhere, specifically into a glass box, which is open only from the top and towards the steps.
Tourists patiently line up at the top of the steps, and then descend one by one to the bottom. They turn their backs, and look into a camera. However, the view is behind them. :-)
