Poenari citadel - Arges valley - video

Poenari citadel - Arges valley - videoPlay
The Poenari citadel is located on the southern slope of the Fagaras Mountains, on the western side of the Transfagaras road, in the Arges Valley, about 4 km from the Vidraru Lake dam. Along a steep incline, a concrete staircase leads up to the castle, which is built atop a mountain. It is said that one must climb 1,480 steps, though we didn't count. :-)

After the relatively exhausting climb, we had hoped to see a larger, more spectacular castle. However, the view of the Arges Valley and the Stan Valley is definitely worth the effort. The latter will be our next hiking destination for the day.

The Stan Valley is a picturesque canyon, even in winter. In fact, when the stream is frozen and covered with a layer of snow, exploring the canyon becomes much quicker and easier. During this time, we can also access areas that were unreachable in the summer, due to high water levels.

We met geotrekking treasure hunters from Gheorgheni, Miercurea Ciuc and Targu Mures in Rastolita. We entered the Calimani Mountains with an off-road vehicle, along the Rastolita and Tihu streams. As it turned out, the well-worn forest road can also be traveled by car for a good distance.

Following today's climb, I experienced the soothing pleasure of immersing myself in the turquoise waters of the Méouge creek, in the pond beneath a waterfall.
